A core value of Straits Metals Limited is to develop open and lasting relationships of mutual understanding and respect with all communities and stakeholders within the areas in which we operate. In concert with this principle the company will be an active participant in the economic and social wellbeing of the communities in which we operate, commensurate with the economic opportunities particular to each location. In particular Straits will: 1. Comply with all applicable local, state and federal laws particularly in relation to heritage, land compensation, security, labour, safety and environmental matters; 2. Seek and pursue ways and means to enhance and improve the core drivers of the local community's economic and social development in areas such as but not limited to: education, health, training and employment, cultural heritage, local commerce and environment. 3. Implement balanced and sustainable programmes and strategies in order to minimise any short or long term impacts that a particular operation, facility or project may have on a local community. 4. Provide for and encourage open and habitual communication with members of local and regional communities in order to establish a clear understanding and awareness of the company's plans and activities within that particular area. 5. Set goals and budgets to ensure that the planned community development programmes and initiatives are achieved. 6. Strive for continuous improvement to demonstrate the Company's commitment and capability as a "good neighbour" within the areas in which the company operates. 7. Review, monitor and report to all stakeholders on the progress and achievements of the company in relation to the communities in which the operations co-exist. 8. Recognise the importance of identifying and preserving specific ancestral lands and culturally significant areas. Avoid or minimise any impacts on these sites in consultation with relevant community members and work to develop appropriate management and protection strategies; 9. Assist to conserve, maintain and minimise any impact on the populations of flora and fauna that may have local cultural significance or be of important biodiversity conservation significance. Straits will integrate social, heritage, community and environmental considerations into the business planning process and strive to conform to international management standards and principles of sustainable development as described by the United Nations Environmental Programme, the International Council of Mining and Metals, and the World Bank Guidelines. |
